Fiberglass Batts

Fiberglass batts are rolls made of woven strands of glass with small air pockets. These rolls are installed between wall frames and in ceilings and require open walls. Most fiberglass batt products include a warning label which states that the product is possibly carcinogenic.

Competitive Advantage

Trace amounts of formaldehyde are used as a binder in many fiberglass batts. Wool does not contain formaldehyde but instead it naturally absorbs and breaks down formaldehyde and other indoor air pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. (Formaldehyde can be emitted from common building materials; nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide are normal by-products of gas stoves and heaters.)

No protective clothing is required before handling Wool Lambsulation. However, when installing fiberglass, a face mask, protective clothing and protective gloves are necessary because the product and the minute particles fiberglass emits can be an irritant to skin, eyes, and upper respiratory systems.

Some fiberglass companies manufacture their product using up to 40% recycled glass from post-consumer recycled beverage containers. However, the balance of the fiberglass is made from virgin material that requires a large amount of energy to manufacture. Fiberglass is non-biodegradable while wool decomposes naturally and safely.

Fiberglass will settle over time. When this happens, the R-value of the fiberglass decreases. Lambsulation is guaranteed to retain its structure and thermal ratings for 50 years!
